I joined Toastmasters to improve my communication skills and build confidence. However, people join for different reasons. I will tell you quite honestly that joining this club has been one of my best decisions! I not only have the opportunity to meet great people, but my speaking skills have improved tremendously. And that is the real focus of Toastmasters.

Y. H. Chen Charter Member
-- Reminiscence --

This is how it all began!

The story of Kaohsiung Toastmasters Club (KTC) goes back many years. It all started on a Sunday afternoon in March 1963. Pilot Wang (Charter President) and Calvin Ling visited C.S.Cheng . During the conversation, Pilot and Calvin brought up the subject of Toastmasers. They said that Toastmasters provided training in "Better Listening, Better Thinking and Better Speaking", and "Leadership Skills".

It seems that they were interested in starting a club, but didn't know how to go about it. C.S. told them that just the right person was sitting in front of them. To their surprise, C.S. had just returned from the United States where he had obtained a kit on How to Build a Toastmasters Club. What an incredible coincidence!

The news of building a Toastmasters club spread quickly in the Kaohsiung area and attracted interested people from Kaohsiung Rotary Club, the Jaycees, St. Pauls Church, a newspaper publisher, Government agencies and Banks to join as charter members. While KTC was awaiting an official charter certificate from Toastmasters International, they held a first preparatory meeting of the club at St. Pauls Church. Fortunately, I was invited to attend this meeting.

Acceptance of the club was received on July 22, 1963 when members of Taipei Toastmasters arrived at the Kaohsiung old Grand Hotel, carrying the KTC Charter and member certificates. One hundred members and guests gathered at the charter ceremony. I was given the honor of delivering the keynote speech entitled "Learning by Doing".

Since then, I have attended KTC meetings regularly, and actively participated in Toastmasters programs and activities. I made remarkable progress and gained self-confidence in public speaking.

As time went by I accepted the challenge of serving as club president and officer beyond club level. The leadership skills I learned and acquired from these offices became valuable assets. They were valuable for both management and advancement in my professional and Toastmasters careers.

I want to thank our great Toastmasters organization for providing a mutually supportive and positive environment, in which I have had the opportunity to develop and enhance my communication and leadership skills over many years. In my mind, KTC is more than a club; it is a big family. I will continue my membership in KTC as long as I can.

Most importantly, my greatest experiences have been learning and working with so many talented and friendly people in Toastmasters and at KTC. These wonderful experiences and memories will remain with me forever!

I offer my Best wishes to all current and future members.
