President's Viewpoints

Get Involved

There's a time-tested maxim in Toastmasters society: Don't turn down stage times. That means, a Toastmaster should seize any chance to speak on stage, be it a formal project speech (prepared speech) or tidbit like a Table Topics speech. Coz' we Toastmasters know more than anything else about "Learning by Doing". 10 minutes of quality stage time is worth more than 10 manuals studied. And the accumulation of stage time is exactly what makes a Toastmaster more composed on stage and more persuasive in delivery.

It is, therefore, the responsibility of whoever in charge of the sessions of a regular meeting to GET EVERYONE INVOLVED. In a Toastmasters Club we are supposed to build a positive learning environment for every member, and a learning environment won't be positive if some of the members are left out in a meeting without the chance to speak on stage.

Obviously, there are two sessions where members without assignments could get involved. While Joke Session is volunteer-based, Table Topics Session Master on the other hand has the power and responsiblity to call upon THOSE WHO DON'T HAVE ASSIGNMENTS (and hence stage times) in the meeting.

But since most of the assignees are more or less more experienced members, which kind of leave the non-assignees more callow ones. A Table Topics Session constituted only by junior Toastmasters might become a somewhat trite or even lame one, which wouldn't be a good thing, either. So it's up to Table Topics Session Master to fathom the ongoing quality of the meeting, and make a right choice in selecting one or two experienced members (albeit with assignments) to light up the session a bit, and then get the rest of the non-assignees involved.

It's an art being a session master or Toastmaster of the meeting. Because you're incharge of the quality of the meeting and it's your responsiblity to make the meeting as interesting and insightful as possible.

So next time when you are in charge of the Table Topics Session, don't leave out those who don't have assignments and at the same time, do whatever you could to keep the session lively and enjoyable.

Let's get everybody involved!!

Toastmasters International Speech Contest

Have you been inspired by watching 2001 and 2002 Toastmaster International Speech Contest during our previous regular meeting? Itˇ¦s really a marvelous speech convention. There are lots of speaking skills that we could learn from them listed as following.

1. Opening:
Deliver a couple lines of speech content directly and then address greeting to Contest Chair and Chief after that, which can strengthen the opening and can make audience expected on the following sentence you are going to say.

2. Body Movement & Hand Gesture:
Basically district level speech contest has much bigger stage than the one in our own club. It means that the exaggerated body movement and hand gesture in district level speech contest is necessary otherwise you will become too tiny to see.

3. Topics:
The topic has to be close to everyoneˇ¦s daily life experience, but it needs to be creative. Besides that, the audience is cross culture, generation and background so the politics, religion and sex related will not be a suitable topic.

This year the district level speech contest will be held around the end of March. Before moving forward to district level speech contest, we will have club level speech contest first as the time frame below.
Club-level Table Topic Contest: Oct. 7
Eligibility: a member of HsinChu Toastmasters

Club-level International Speech Contest: Mar.21
Eligibility: a member of HsinChu Toastmasters with C6 or above

The winner will be representing us to go further for the division and district level contest. It's a great opportunity to pave the way to the world championship. I strongly suggest you all to take this good challenge to be part of Annual Toastmaster Speech Contest. If you are interested in joining the club level speech contest, please contact VPE, Linda.
