     善用有效溝通、建立美好社會 Dr. Tim Keck, DTM

On November 15th, 2004, International President 1999-2000 Tim Keck, DTM, came to Graduate Institute of Translation and Interpretation (GITI), and gave a special lecture on “building a better world through effective communication” at Mandarin Center of National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU). More than 100 people participated in this Toastmasters event. Half of them were non-toastmasters, mainly students from Department of English Literature of NTNU.

District 67 Governor George Yen, DTM, Lt. DG Marketing Steve Tung, DTM, District PR Sally Wu, Immediate Past DG Athena Lien, DTM, Division C Governor Bright Huang, along with many senior toastmasters took their time off to accompany Dr. Tim Keck to this special lecture. Junior toastmasters from colleges and universities also joined this special Toastmasters promotion activity at NTNU, even during the mid-term examination period.

After Professor Emily Ho, the founder GITI, introduced the keynote speaker, Dr. Tim Keck walked on the stage with full confidence and greeted all the students and members. As a historian in profession, Dr. Keck firstly talked about the history of Toastmasters International. Then he shared with us his story why he joined the Toastmasters club at the age of 35. When he was a Fulbright fellow at the University of Marburg, Germany, he was often teased by his students. They would bet how many ah(s) he made, and how many steps he walked across the classroom during his lecture. So Dr. Keck decided to improve his public speaking skills by joining a local Toastmasters Club in Ramstein. He became a different person after he joined the club, and eventually he became the first DTM in Europe. Dr. Keck advised the students to join the Toastmasters clubs when they are still at school. They will for sure benefit from the education and training programs of Toastmasters International, and become better communicators in the work field after they graduate from school. Good communication skills are important and necessary for building a better world. Effective communicators not only benefit the society and but also themselves.

The second half of meeting was a Toastmasters showcase. Sherry Li was the Toastmaster of the Day, she is a student from GITI. She introduced the meeting program briefly, as Dr. Keck already mentioned the history of Toastmasters International in his special lecture. The joke session was led by Helen Lin, Incumbent President of Grand TMC. Four joke tellers shared with us their funny stories, followed by two prepared speakers invited to demonstrate the public speaking skills in a humorous way.
Michelle Liu, EVP of Legacy TMC, just won 2004 National Humorous Speech Contest in Mandarin. She talked about her painful lessons trying to control her weight under sixty kilograms, and gave us her advises how to stay fit and attractive. While Michelle delivered her speech in Mandarin, students from GITI provided simultaneous interpretation services from Mandarin to English for Dr. Tim Keck.

Annie Lee, from Sunrise TMC, delivered her speech at the National Humorous Speech Contest in English. She talked about “Chinese or Taiwanese”. Again, she won a full house of applause. Victor Lee, ATM-G, from Grand TMC, served as a general evaluator. He commented on the good parts of the showcase, and provided his suggestions for future improvements. Victor also mentioned that he insisted to include “Toastmaster” in his newly edited English-Chinese dictionary.
At two o'clock, the students were in a hurry to catch up their afternoon classes, and started leaving, Q&A was then cancelled. It was a pity because some members and guests were deprived of the chance to ask Dr. Tim Keck and District Governor George Yen any questions. Fortunately, after the Special Lecture, Dr. Tim Keck invited many senior toastmasters to NTNU coffee shop for drinks, to exchange ideas as to conduct better university demo meetings in the future.

After the VIP(s) left for their next appointment with the President of CTCI, the real happy hour began. It was a relaxing moment with David Chen, Toastmaster of Year 2003, Helen Lin, Incumbent President of Grand TMC, Grace Lu, President 1996, Grand TMC. What did we talk about? Of course, how to dress up for the 2004 Christmas Party. Toastmasters club is not only a learning laboratory of communication and leadership skills, but also a great place to meet people from all walks of live, and have fun.

(Sherry Li, ATM-B, President 1993, Grand TMC)
