My 5th DTM. By Caroline Kiang

“There can be no failure to a woman, who has not lost her courage, her character, her self-respect, or her self-confidence. “ • Orison Swett Marden

Orison Swett Marden was Bill Gates, Barack Obama, and many other successful entrepreneurs’ mentor. I have lived by these words for many years.

In 2009, my kids all graduated from college, and I needed to decide if I wanted to stay in Chicago to handle my real estate company and insurance agency company (which are crazy busy) or to move to Taiwan to start playing ma-jong and have an easier life with my husband. However, instead playing ma-jong, he recommended that I join Toastmasters. I trusted his recommendation because he is an engineer. If an engineer says it is good, it must be good.

During the past 10 years, I served in Toastmasters, starting from club officer all the way to district director. Even though I used to manage 30 employees and I thought I knew all about leadership, Toastmasters gave me more training in it, especially in High Performance Leadership project.

Toastmasters has taught me:
1.Courage and effort are not enough without purpose and direction.
2.Stay true to your character. There are three constants in life . . . change, choice, and principles.
3.Respect myself and be honest with yourself. Did I really try my best? Try your best and leave the result to God to decide.
4.Stay confident. Toastmasters is the place to train your confidence. With confidence and realization of one’s own potential, one can build a better world.

Ten years in Toastmasters not only helped me become a decent public speaker, but also helped me to search for my dream and search for excellence. As a result, I published my first book and had my first oil painting exhibition. 200 friends participated in my ribbon cutting ceremony. Thanks to all my friends. You all raise me up to where I can be.
In my last speech as DTM 5, A30, my topic was “What is the meaning of life?” I offered 4 H’s.

1H - Be Happy - this is best thing you can do for everyone around you and yourself

2H- Be Healthy - health is number 1. Everything else (money, fame, power) doesn’t matter without health. Sleep early, eat healthy and exercise more.

3H- Lend a Hand to whoever is in need. That is the reason I offered 5 HPL classes and will offer a 6th one in July.

4H - Be a life time Happy learner. The minute you stop learning, life stops.
In the past 10 years with Toastmasters, with planning and enthusiasm, I earned
5 DTMs and sponsored 20 clubs. I’m not trying to show how great I am - I just want to say - you can achieve your goal if you REALLY want to. Also, I benefited so much from Toastmasters. Why not to let everyone know how great this organization is?

I had my MBA in finance and worked 18 years as a controller many many years ago. I had 3 kids and put my family first at that time. Now, I have decided to start my doctoral degree in Business Administration this year. I know I am old, but to my younger friends - what are you waiting for to achieve your dream?

Happy
Healthy
Helping hand
Happy Life-time learner
