There is a will, there is a way.

I lived in the United States for more than 20 years, and I moved back to Taiwan in December 2008.

Upon my husband Webster Kiang’s request, he was already a DTM then, I joined the Toastmasters family in April 1, 2009.

I received my DTM in July 2, 2012. Many friends asked me how did I do it to get my DTM so soon. I told them, I am a person who is a lifetime learner and I always want to try my best.

During those four years, I have visited more than 30 clubs and delivered 100+ speeches. The most useful tool I used is the recorder, not only I recorded my own speeches, I also record other member’s speech and evaluation. This process makes me a better evaluator and also a better speaker.

I am a MBA with many many year experiences as a controller for some major firms, then I work as a financial planner after my husband moved back to Taiwan in 1993. Public speaking is not a new toy to me, I used to give a seminar to teach people how to manage their financial assets and also plan their trust paper works.

But, frankly speaking, I never really spent time to study it or to work toward how to become a better speaker. A couple days ago, I was trying to organized my Toastmaster Manuals and found my first C1 book (I did 4 CC so far) I can see the differences between Caroline then and Caroline now. I cannot say I am very good on public speaking now, but I do get quite a few invitations from associations and universities asking me to their facilities to give some educational lecture.

I am very grateful to my husband, Webster, who knew this is the subject I liked and give me a chance to fulfill one of my dreams.

As to the leadership training, I took the role of EVP immediately after I joined Happy Toastmasters Club, then I moved up to the president of TTY club. On July 1, 2011, I took over the role as area A4 governor, I told myself, I will do the best and get the president area designation.

Not until May 2012, I noticed that we are one CC short to be presidential distinguished, after I called all the president of my area, they told me: ” Caroline, there is no way we can do a CC in one month.” With no other choice, I decided to do it my self.

At that time, I have bought an airline ticket to the US to visit my kids on June 19. I finished 6 speeches in Taipei. I made my mind that I would call 4 clubs in three states in US (Calif, Iowa, and Illinois) asking them if they could give me 5-7 minutes time to deliver a speech. Everything was planned so good but one week before I took the trip, I fell when I played tennis and twisted my angle and it was swollen.

I was wheeled to the aircraft. For the next few weeks, I suffered pain and use GPS trying driving around the city to find the clubs that I have to give speeches. I finally got the additional CC and received three best speaker awards from those clubs I visited in USA.

The invisible wings help me to overcome my frustration, my weakness, there is always a sound by my ear told me: “as long as there is a slightest chance, do not give up”.

I appreciate the friendship among the Toastmasters family. Especially for a person like me just moved back from another country to this new and familiar land.

I especially appreciate those who support me during my campaign for Lt. Governor-Marketing, they told me:’Caroline, 加油! We support you.“

As usual, I will do my best to serve this lifetime-learning, non-profit, educational, great organization.
