DTM: A Journey of Love

“How will you show love to others?” Paul Sharpe asked the crowd attending his workshop during the 2016 Spring Conference at Yuanshan Grand Hotel. He said that love is the key to cultivating successful clubs. Three years later I learned that the DTM award is also all about loving others.

I knew it was time to chase my DTM when I served as Division H director in 2018. The closer I came to the finish line, the more I understood how much a proper DTM journey centers around love. A DTM is someone who loves their Toastmasters community and serves clubs without reservation. A DTM is someone who loves their audience that they strive to create relevant and meaningful speeches. A DTM is in essence “determined to matter” to the community.

Before moving to Japan in October 2019, I made one final, intense push to finish up my last set of speeches and projects. I started my Toastmasters in District 67, so graduating before leaving my Taiwan home meant the world to me. As my departure drew close, many clubs and members supported me. They gave me speaking slots, opportunities to teach, and even came to my home for a workshop. The relationships I made within and beyond my home club brought me great joy.

A DTM award bears the name of its recipient, but there are many names that should be on that award. They are the names of people who lifted me up along the journey. I wish to particularly thank a few special supporters who constantly taught and encouraged me. To my TGIF family, particularly Paul Sharpe, Queenie Sharpe, Lester Lin, and Iris Chou, you are shining lights in my life. You have been there since the beginning of my Toastmasters journey. Outside of my home club, I benefited from the guidance and advice of Annie Cheng, Alex Huang, Matthew Mak, and Simone Nash. Finally, Carolyn Calpin, my wife and dearest friend, gave me the time I needed to prepare and visit many clubs. She as always is the greatest life partner I could ever have.

To all of my District 67 brothers and sisters, I love you. You are my family. My love for each other fill your speeches and projects.
