In 2001 - 2002, I served as the EVP of FYTC, the most important officer’s position with the then president, Richard Wu. Because of the close team work required I came to know him quite better.

He was smart, a man of efficiency, few words, and worked very hard. His president’s job was extremely heavy because of the departures of many of the club officers who left FYTC due to job relocations or personal reasons, etc. However, Richard performed like a superman; without complaints, he fulfilled his president’s job with one hand, and handled the other officers’ jobs with the other.

I’d say if my EVP job was like part of a train, then Richard, our 6th president, was like the powerful locomotive engine. He helped on my EVP job, led the club and made the train of FYTC run smoothly, and left behind a great legacy of credits to claim: In his term FYTC won the Select Distinguished Club award and produced one District Speech Contest champion, Lily Tseng. Richard successfully made an extraordinary spotlight in the glory of FYTC and left with us a beautiful page in the history of FYTC.

On June 9th, 2002, the day of FYTC’s Club Officer’s Installation, Richard passed his president’s gavel to me, and I became the 7th club president; meanwhile, he was promoted to be Area 11 Governor. As we all could see, Richard played a tremendously important role in Area, Division and District Conferences in the following years. He was considered to be a potential future District Governor because of his superb abilities, sincerity and always being so responsible yet serving with such a kind heart.

In my presidency, Richard, IPP, was one of the most helpful mentors for me to consult with. He was always there whenever I needed him. There is a clear picture in my mind which will never be forgotten, Richard used to have some tiny yellow sticker pad in his shirt pocket, and he would take it out to jot down the questions whenever he couldn’t offer me the immediate answers, and soon later, the answers would definitely appear by e-mails.

That was Richard, a man we all could count on. He was truly marvelous, trustworthy, and devoted; when we had him it was as if we had everything. He was completely like our dear brother.

However, life is like every thing else, it is ever changing; nothing can really be permanent. Richard stayed away from our sights farther and farther in the pass few years.

He quit FYTC & TEATC and ended his entire Toastmasters career in late 2009 for some personal reasons. Since then, sporadically some of us heard from him, but we never could see him again even though we missed him a lot.

On the day of December 15th, 2011, he left us the last time for good because of a sudden illness. It was shocking and heartbreaking. We just couldn’t bear losing our dearest brother, couldn’t hold tears, we wept, sobbed and regretted the togetherness we could never make up any more…... How he could leave us like that!

Richard came to our lives, left precious footprints in our hearts and in those of Toastmasters. His spirit is immortal and will stay forever in Toastmasters.

May Richard rest in peace along side his Lord, Jesus Christ.
